Arabic version: فشل الهدنة في عيد الفصح في جلب السلام الدائم في أوكرانيا
An Orthodox Easter truce agreed by Russia and Ukraine came into force on Saturday afternoon but quickly faced challenges. Just 38 minutes after the ceasefire took effect, air raid sirens were heard in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine. Despite the truce intended to last until Easter Monday, reports of multiple ceasefire violations have emerged, although no long-range missile or drone strikes were recorded during this period. According to BBC News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed disappointment over the lack of trust in the truce, stating that Ukrainian forces would respond “strictly in kind” to any actions by Moscow.
As families gathered at St John the Theologian Church to celebrate Easter, they brought traditional baskets filled with festive foods for a blessing. The service was altered from its usual midnight timing to accommodate curfews, reflecting the ongoing impact of the war. The church itself has been damaged during the conflict, with its windows still boarded up. One parishioner expressed skepticism about the truce, suggesting that Russia would likely intensify its attacks afterward.
Military personnel in Kharkiv remain on alert during the ceasefire. Members of the Yasni Ochi UAV unit are preparing their equipment for the frontlines, adhering to orders to remain passive unless provoked. Their commander, Heorhiy, voiced concerns about Russia’s reliability and emphasized the need for Ukraine to continue fighting until it can secure favorable negotiation terms with its allies.
The situation on the ground remains dire, with extensive damage to buildings in Kharkiv region from previous attacks. Local residents, like Olha, shared harrowing experiences of missile strikes that have devastated their neighborhoods. Many are desperate for peace, with Olha articulating the hope for a lasting end to the violence rather than temporary reprieves. Zelensky has proposed transforming the current truce into a more enduring ceasefire, but the Kremlin has already rejected that, signaling that hostilities will resume following the truce’s expiration.
