Arabic version: حادثة إدنبرة تترك أربعة في المستشفى بعد هجوم رجل مسلح
Four people have been taken to hospital after a bare-chested man was seen roaming the streets of Edinburgh carrying a large weapon. The man was filmed battering the locked door of a pizzeria on Leith Walk, prompting public panic as bystanders ran down the street. According to BBC News, the Muslim engagement group MEND Scotland reported that several of the victims were from the Muslim community.
Police said they had arrested a 36-year-old man and assured the public that there was no further risk. No details have been released on the condition of the four people injured, but it has been reported that two of them were injured close to the Broomhouse mosque in the west of the city.
Footage from various locations shows the man causing chaos, including at a Shell petrol station where a taxi’s windows were smashed. Broken glass and a hand axe were visible inside the damaged vehicle. Additional videos depict the man at a BP petrol station, where he pushed multiple shelves over and scattered items on the floor.
Witnesses described scenes of disorder as the man approached various establishments, including the pizzeria, where staff closed the electronic shutters as he struck the door panes with the weapon. The police cordoned off multiple areas, and paramedics were seen providing medical assistance to another individual on the ground. The arrested man reportedly swore and shouted that he was “protecting the country” while being restrained by police.
