According to Allafrica, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has pledged to accelerate joint economic projects with Tanzania following bilateral talks with President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the State House in Dar es Salaam during his one-day state visit.
El-Sisi said the discussions sought to turn the countries’ long-standing political and diplomatic ties into practical economic cooperation, with a focus on trade, investment and infrastructure development. He said both sides aimed for a “qualitative shift” in bilateral cooperation that would support joint development and mutual benefit.
Egypt is ready to take part in expanding and modernising the Port of Dar es Salaam, El-Sisi said. He described the port as a strategic gateway for Tanzania and neighbouring countries, and said the work should form part of a wider regional logistics framework intended to improve East African connectivity and trade.
He also proposed a direct maritime shipping route between Egypt’s Safaga Port and Dar es Salaam, saying it could lower transport costs and transit times for goods moving between North and East Africa. The Egyptian president further proposed a multimodal corridor linking Cairo and Dar es Salaam through integrated transport and logistics infrastructure.
The leaders discussed joint agricultural projects to turn suitable land into productive farmland, initially increasing strategic-crop output to support food security before expanding to export markets. El-Sisi also cited Egyptian companies’ work on the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project and said Egyptian institutions and firms would intensify expertise transfers, technical support and training for Tanzanian professionals.
Cooperation is also set to cover construction, roads, electricity, energy, agriculture, irrigation, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, alongside greater private-sector participation. The talks addressed developments in the Middle East, Horn of Africa and Red Sea, while the two leaders agreed to maintain consultations on matters of mutual interest.
