Muslims in Australia recently celebrated Eid al-Fitr, a significant Islamic holiday marking the end of Ramadan, while facing concerns for family members in the Middle East. According to SBS News, over 800,000 Muslims in Australia participated in the festivities, which included traditional prayers and family gatherings.

However, this year’s celebrations were marked by anxiety as ongoing conflicts in the Middle East cast a shadow over the holiday. The war, which began on 28 February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, has caused distress among Australian Muslims who are worried about the safety of their relatives in the region.

Bilal El-Hayek, mayor of the City of Canterbury Bankstown, noted the emotional toll on the community, stating that while Eid is a “wonderful day”, many are feeling tired and anxious due to the ongoing violence. Reports indicate that almost 30 individuals have lost their lives in the Persian Gulf since the conflict escalated.

In Lebanon, the situation has been dire, with significant casualties reported and many displaced from their homes. Gamel Kheir of the Lebanese Muslim Association emphasized the need for community unity during these challenging times and urged the Australian government to take action to protect those affected by the violence. The Australian government recently announced an additional $5 million in humanitarian aid to support civilians impacted by the conflict, bringing its total assistance since October 2023 to over $135 million.

For many in Lebanon, the joy of Eid has been overshadowed by tragedy. Displaced individuals have expressed that the holiday feels distant, with one mother describing the stark contrast between past celebrations and their current circumstances. As families in Australia celebrate, they remain hopeful for peace and safety for their loved ones in the Middle East.
