According to ABC News, authorities have issued an emergency warning for a bushfire at Stockwell Road in Blackmore, west of Berry Springs. People who are unprepared have been advised to leave now, while residents in the area have been told to enact their bushfire survival plan immediately.
Bushfires NT said structures had been impacted as the fire moved towards Mieland Road and Tuey Close. Acting Chief Fire Control Officer Nathaniel Stanford told ABC Radio Darwin that properties along Mieland Road were under threat and crews were installing tactical back burns in an effort to prevent the fire reaching them.
Mr Stanford said spot fires were occurring ahead of the front on the mapping system. Reports from the fireground indicated structures had been “impacted and engulfed”, though he said the details had not been confirmed. He urged residents whose properties faced an approaching fire to leave if they were unprepared, or to follow their bushfire survival plan if they intended to stay and defend their property.
The fire was expected to continue spreading north-west over the next hour before a wind-direction change at about 5pm, Mr Stanford said. A watch and act warning is also in place for a fast-moving fire at Uralla Road in Katherine East, burning towards the Victoria Highway between the rail corridor and Uralla Road. A 24-hour fire ban for the Top End has been extended into tomorrow.
