According to BBC News, England have won the Cerebral Palsy World Cup for the first time after beating the United States 2-1 in a final in Atlanta.

The United States, the hosts, took the lead from a corner with three minutes remaining. Sam Dewhirst equalised to send the match into extra time.

England’s Para Lions secured the trophy when David Porcher fired home after Dewhirst’s shot was saved.

Head coach Jack Rutter described the victory as historic for the sport. “It feels unbelievable,” he said, praising the sacrifice made by players and staff. Rutter said the team had travelled hoping to win a medal and that he could not believe they had won the World Cup for the first time.

The result follows England’s powerchair squad losing their World Cup final to France on Friday.
