According to BBC News, England ended the summer with a 3-0 Test series sweep of Pakistan but still face uncertainty over their standing before major challenges in South Africa, Australia and India. Joe Root is again Test captain and Kevin Pietersen is back in the fold after a turbulent period that brought the end of the Bazball era and the loss of Ben Stokes.

Root’s side showed calmness for much of the Pakistan series, but a chaotic two-hour spell led by Razaullah on the third evening of the third Test at Edgbaston revived doubts from Root’s first period as captain. Stand-in coach Marcus Trescothick said he was disappointed by what happened. England’s record in defining series remains a concern: the 2023 Ashes were drawn, Sri Lanka won at The Oval in late 2024, and England did not win the final Test against India last year.

The pace attack has been a major positive. Ollie Robinson took 28 wickets at an average of 9.32, while Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson have formed a four-man group compared with England’s 2005 Ashes-winning attack. However, England have limited experienced cover: Sam Cook, Sonny Baker, Matthew Fisher and Henry Crocombe have four caps between them. Brydon Carse is available, though his potential tour selection is uncertain while the Derby incident remains under investigation.

Selection questions also remain around spin, the top order and Root’s form. Bangladesh’s two February matches are expected to require a different balance, with Shoaib Bashir, Jack Leach, Dom Bess, Will Jacks, James Coles, Mason Crane, Liam Patterson-White, Calvin Harrison and Jack Carson among possible spin options. Jordan Cox and Emilio Gay have each made three half-centuries in their first Test summers, while Jacob Bethell is expected back from a knee injury. Root ends a home summer without a century for the first time since 2019 and will meet incoming coach Stephen Fleming to plan England’s route forward.
