Enzo Maresca has officially signed a three-year contract with Manchester City, taking over as head coach following Pep Guardiola’s departure in May. The former Chelsea manager, who is 46 years old, will pay compensation to Chelsea, where he previously served until January after a disappointing run of results.

According to BBC News, the appointment of Maresca was delayed due to negotiations between Chelsea and Manchester City over the compensation package, which reportedly amounts to about £17m. This fee is separate from the agreement reached between Maresca and Chelsea regarding his exit.

Maresca resigned from Chelsea after a tumultuous period where the team managed only one win in seven Premier League matches. While Chelsea’s statement suggested the decision was mutual, Maresca later confirmed that it was his choice to leave, acknowledging that it led to disruptions for the club. He expressed regret for the manner of his departure in a statement on Instagram.

The former assistant to Guardiola during City’s Treble-winning season now steps into a pivotal role at the club. His arrival is seen as a significant move for Manchester City, who are looking to maintain their competitive edge in the Premier League and beyond. Chelsea, on the other hand, had a challenging season following Maresca’s exit, finishing 10th and experiencing managerial instability.

Maresca’s first season at City will be closely watched, especially given his previous success as an assistant coach. His appointment marks a strategic shift for Manchester City, as they aim to continue their recent success in domestic and European competitions.
