The Inland Oil Refinery (IOR) in Eromanga, Queensland, is poised for potential expansion as the state government accelerates oil projects. Operating since 1986, the refinery has been a vital source of underground mining fuel, producing up to 1,250 barrels of oil per day, significantly less than larger facilities like Ampol’s in Brisbane.

According to ABC News, the expansion prospects are linked to the development of the Taroom Trough oil field, which spans 750 square kilometers and was recently approved for new exploration. IOR’s CEO, Drew Morland, highlighted that the refinery’s current output is limited by supply, but the new oil field could facilitate increased production capacity.

As oil exploration in the Taroom Trough progresses, IOR is collaborating with Omega TN Pty Ltd, which is currently testing operations at the site. Omega’s CEO, Trevor Brown, noted that the refinery’s capacity would be crucial as production ramps up, indicating ongoing discussions about future expansion.

The refinery plays a critical role in supplying diesel and solvents to the mining sector and the local community. With rising demand for low-emissions diesel, industry experts emphasize the importance of securing domestic fuel sources to ensure operational continuity for mining operations. Queensland’s Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Dale Last, stated that the government is committed to supporting infrastructure development necessary for oil production in the region.
