A 31-year-old man, accused of causing a tragic double-fatal crash in Camden, had escaped from Cumberland Hospital’s mental health unit nearly one week prior to the incident. According to ABC News, the crash occurred on February 14, resulting in the deaths of 60-year-old Lee Casuscelli and her passenger, 84-year-old Maureen Crosland.

The driver had been involuntarily detained under the NSW Mental Health Act at Cumberland Hospital, Australia’s largest mental health facility. He allegedly absconded on February 8 after threatening a nurse and taking an access card. Although NSW Police were informed of his escape, they were unable to locate him before the crash.

The incident has drawn attention to the mental health care system in New South Wales, particularly Cumberland Hospital, which has faced criticism for staffing shortages and operational challenges. The hospital’s spokesperson emphasized that the safety of patients and staff is a priority, but the recent events have raised concerns about the effectiveness of their protocols.

In a related development, another patient, 25-year-old Setefano Mooniai Leaaetoa, also escaped from Cumberland Hospital shortly before allegedly stabbing three people in Merrylands, one of whom died. This pattern of absconding patients has intensified scrutiny on the mental health system, prompting calls for urgent reforms.

As investigations into the Camden crash and the circumstances surrounding the escapes continue, NSW Police have stated that they cannot comment further as the matter remains under investigation. The community is left grappling with the implications of these incidents, highlighting the urgent need for improvements in mental health care and public safety measures.
