According to BBC News, Joshua Foster, 37, from Essex, has been fined 3,000 euro (£2,500) after his two-year-old son fell to his death at a hotel in Cyprus.

Paphos District Court heard that the child fell nearly 40ft (12.1m) from the fourth floor of the King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort in Chlorakas on 12 July. The incident happened on the first day of the family’s holiday.

Foster admitted causing death through a reckless, rash or dangerous act and was sentenced on Friday morning. He had placed his son on a windowsill to show him the view of a waterpark, believing the window was closed, before losing control of him, the court previously heard.

Police were called at about 18:40 following reports that a child had fallen under unknown circumstances. The boy was taken to Paphos General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Foster said after the sentencing: “Thank you for the support. I’m looking forward to going home and being with my wife and daughter.” His lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, said Foster had no previous convictions and that his remorse was clear.
