According to BBC News, Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge featured an influential first league start of the season for Estevao Willian and a decisive solo goal from Morgan Rogers.
Estevao, 19, had two goals ruled out for offside, including an early effort and a near-post finish in the second half. The Brazil international completed 86 minutes and received a standing ovation from Chelsea supporters, as well as a hug from head coach Xabi Alonso. He had six shots, 12 touches in the opposition penalty area, created three chances, delivered eight crosses and completed five dribbles.
Alonso said he had told Estevao after last weekend’s home defeat by Tottenham that he would play against United. “He has had the best response to show that he deserves more, that he was prepared,” Alonso said. Before the match, Estevao had made only one start this season, against Luton Town in the Carabao Cup in September.
Rogers broke the deadlock in the 50th minute after taking Romeo Lavia’s pass, moving through the United defence and lifting a chip over Senne Lammens. The £117m club-record signing has six goals and four assists in 13 appearances this season. Cole Palmer later converted a penalty for his first goal in six games, sealing the win after United had dominated the first half but failed to take their chances.
Chelsea were without eight players before kick-off, with first-choice striker Joao Pedro sidelined by a thigh injury. Alonso said his side needed to be creative with the players available, while noting that Chelsea would “look very different” and be “better” by the end of the season.
