Eva Carneiro has made history by becoming the youngest player to compete in the Super Netball league at just 16 years old. Carneiro made her debut for the Giants during the First Nations Round, stepping onto the court in the third quarter against the Adelaide Thunderbirds. Despite the team’s 70-37 loss, her participation marks a significant milestone in the sport.
According to ABC News, Carneiro has been balancing her studies and netball commitments while already showcasing her leadership skills as the school captain at Aquinas Catholic College. Her debut follows the legacy of former Australian Diamonds players who also debuted at 16, setting the stage for her future in the sport.
The Giants’ defeat against the Thunderbirds officially eliminated them from the title race, leaving them at the bottom of the standings. Coach Nerida Stewart expressed her frustration with the team’s performance, emphasizing the need for self-reflection and improvement as the season progresses.
In other matches, the Melbourne Mavericks secured their playoff position with a win over the Sunshine Coast Lightning, while the Queensland Firebirds were knocked out of contention after losing to the West Coast Fever. The Melbourne Vixens claimed the Sargeant-McKinnis Cup after defeating the NSW Swifts, further establishing their dominance in the league.
As the season approaches its conclusion, discussions are intensifying regarding the upcoming Commonwealth Games selections. Thunderbirds co-captain Georgie Horjus is anticipated to be a key player for the national team, emphasizing the importance of representation for young players from South Australia.
With just three rounds remaining in the regular season, the focus will shift to final preparations and the selection process for the Commonwealth Games, as teams vie for their spots in the playoffs.
