According to BBC News, The Friedkin Group has effectively put Everton up for sale after taking control of a 99.5% stake in December 2024. TFG, which also owns Serie A club AS Roma, paid more than £400m for the stake and helped bring financial stability after the final period of Farhad Moshiri’s ownership.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire told BBC Sport that TFG could seek between £750m and £800m for a full sale, with a buyer taking on current debts of about £468m. He said the Premier League market is buoyant, with only 20 clubs available to buy, and suggested potential interest could come from the United States.

Maguire said TFG may have been affected by having to pay Burnley more than £35m over a breach of financial rules. Everton were found in 2024 to have broken Profit and Sustainability Rules over a three-year period. TFG injected £38m to cover the cost, while Everton have appealed.

The ownership group’s relationship with supporters deteriorated after an attempted £40m sale of academy midfielder Harrison Armstrong to Nottingham Forest. Everton later sold Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City for £65m and Beto to Fiorentina, while a proposed move for Monaco forward Folarin Balogun collapsed. Manager David Moyes said he learned of the potential sale at the same time as the public and said he hoped the club would get the right people to take it forward.
