According to BBC News, players found guilty of discrimination will face a minimum 10-match suspension under strengthened Football Association rules for the new season.

The sanction also applies to managers and people in the technical area. It forms part of the FA’s commitment to “delivering a game free from discrimination”.

Previously, suspensions for aggravated breaches of FA Rule E3.2 ranged from six to 12 matches. The rule covers misconduct involving references to ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, religion, sex, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation or disability.

The FA said discriminatory conduct remains a challenge across football despite significant progress in recent years, adding that enhanced measures are needed to tackle the conduct.

A regulatory commission may impose a ban above the new 10-match minimum where there are significant aggravating factors. A minimum six-match suspension can be considered where there are mitigating circumstances or where an individual admits a breach at the earliest opportunity.

Those found to have committed two or more aggravated breaches on separate occasions could face suspensions exceeding 12 matches, or time-based bans of any duration in very serious cases.
