According to BBC News, the Football Association will canvass England players as part of its review of the team’s World Cup campaign. English football’s governing body has begun the post-tournament process it says it carries out after every major international competition.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel and members of his backroom staff were at St George’s Park last week to examine the team’s performance in North America. A wider report into England’s World Cup campaign will be delivered later, with members of Tuchel’s squad expected to be spoken to and their feedback considered.

The player consultation comes after England’s 2-1 semi-final defeat by Argentina. England took a 1-0 lead through Anthony Gordon, but there was an emerging sense among squad members that Tuchel’s substitutions and tactical approach contributed to the loss. BBC Sport reported within 24 hours of the defeat that at least three senior players had privately expressed misgivings about the closing stages.

There was a widely held view that England’s changes and set-up became too defensive late in the match, when the side conceded two goals. The review will also assess the impact of the team’s permanent Kansas City base, including the effects of returning there after every game during the tournament.

England beat France in the bronze medal match, recording their best World Cup finish since winning the trophy in 1966. Key FA figures regard the tournament as a success and have backed Tuchel before Euro 2028 qualifying. England’s next match is a Nations League fixture against Spain on 26 September, followed by two games against the Czech Republic either side of a match with Croatia in the next international window.
