Arabic version: عائلة مطلق النار في شاطئ بوندي تواجه تهديدات وترهيب
The family of Naveed Akram, the Bondi Beach gunman, is living in fear following targeted attacks, including death threats and harassment. This alarming situation was detailed in a Sydney court as Akram’s lawyer sought suppression orders to protect the identities and addresses of his family members. According to ABC News, public defender Richard Wilson SC highlighted the ongoing threats faced by Akram’s mother and siblings, who have reportedly endured stalking and intimidation since the December 14 shooting.
Naveed Akram is facing nearly 60 charges, including 15 counts of murder and one of committing a terrorist attack. Mr. Wilson emphasized the unprecedented public outrage and grief surrounding the case, asserting that the family should not be held accountable for his actions. He argued for court orders to prevent the publication of their names and addresses, claiming that this information could incite further violence from vigilantes.
The court heard that the family’s experiences of harassment began shortly after the shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 15 innocent people. Incidents reported included eggs thrown at their house, abusive messages, and even physical intimidation from unknown individuals. Naveed’s mother expressed her constant fear for their safety, stating that publicity surrounding the case exacerbates their anxiety.
However, barrister Matthew Lewis SC, representing various media outlets, contended that the proposed suppression orders would be ineffective since the information is already publicly available. He emphasized that the court must assess the likelihood and immediacy of any risk to the family, suggesting that the incidents reported have diminished over time. The court’s decision on the suppression orders is expected next month.
