According to ABC News, Brisbane residents say late-night construction at a planned 24-hour McDonald’s in West End has repeatedly disturbed their sleep, with footage obtained by 612 ABC Brisbane showing work continuing well past midnight.

Metadata on one video showed workers unloading steel at 4am. A Brisbane City Council spokesperson said the council had not authorised work at the site at that time. Under council laws, construction is generally permitted from 6.30am to 6.30pm unless an out-of-hours approval has been granted.

Council documents show construction company Store Tec had approval to work between 9pm and 2am on certain nights. The spokesperson said there was no approval for work at 4am and that out-of-hours activity could only proceed with appropriate approvals in place. Store Tec declined to comment on whether it had breached its permit, saying the matter was for McDonald’s.

Resident TJ, who asked not to be named, said cranes, drills and reversing trucks had woken him for several months, more often than the five nights permitted under the council’s out-of-hours construction permit. Another resident, Danvre Clements, said heavy machinery had kept him awake for months. McDonald’s said it was investigating the concerns with construction partners. The West End restaurant is scheduled to open in late 2026.
