Fifa has opened an investigation following allegations of racist abuse involving American social media influencer IShowSpeed during Argentina’s 3-2 win over Cape Verde at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 3.

According to BBC News, IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., has gained significant popularity, boasting 57 million subscribers on YouTube and 53 million followers on TikTok. He has been live-streaming matches throughout the tournament, featuring notable figures such as Fifa president Gianni Infantino and former football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The governing body of football stated that it was made aware of the incident and has “immediately initiated an investigation.” IShowSpeed was seen in footage on his YouTube channel wearing a Cape Verde kit, engaged in a confrontation with an Argentina fan in the stands.

Fifa emphasized the importance of unity, diversity, and respect during the World Cup, stating, “Anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.” This investigation comes shortly after French forward Kylian Mbappe criticized a Paraguayan senator for making racist remarks, further highlighting ongoing issues of racism in football.
