According to ABC News, a small group of DJs fly into regional Western Australian towns for weekend nightclub performances, bringing variety to venues in mining hubs and other remote locations. Unlike an estimated 60,000 fly-in-fly-out workers in the state, these performers are not travelling for resources industry jobs.

Benny Gee, a sales representative known as DJ Benny Gee, flies 1,550 kilometres north of Perth to Karratha every two months. He typically leaves on a Friday afternoon, plays on Friday and Saturday nights, and returns on Sunday. His shifts can run from 10pm until 4:30am or 5am. Four years into the work, he said the regional bookings have helped him share his music with new audiences and prepare for his ambition to tour internationally.

Alex Kozza flies to northern WA every two to three weeks alongside his regular DJ work in Perth. The 21-year-old said the trips feel like a holiday and that people are often surprised regional clubs fly DJs across the country. After three years performing in Karratha, he said he has developed friendships in the community, with people picking him up from the airport or playing golf with him.

Booking agent John Fraser manages about 10 FIFO DJs who work in regional clubs in locations including Karratha, Broome and Port Hedland. He began booking multiple DJs in Karratha shortly after COVID, after a venue owner sought more variety than relying on the same Perth DJ each weekend. Mr Fraser said the lifestyle was not for everyone, particularly those with families, while noting that some venues still prefer flying in performers even as local talent develops.
