Explosions have been heard during a fire inside a bicycle shop in the busy Byron Bay CBD this afternoon. Fire and Rescue NSW received multiple Triple Zero (000) calls over reports of a building fire in Jonson Street just before 1pm, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
According to ABC News, the fire broke out in a busy area of Byron Bay, filled with holiday-makers enjoying the Easter school holidays. Firefighters encountered challenging conditions upon arrival, including significant smoke, which complicated their firefighting efforts.
Acting Superintendent Andrew Bickle indicated that possible explosions of lithium-ion batteries may have occurred during the blaze. Fortunately, shop staff were able to evacuate the building safely, and the manager of the residential units above ensured that residents were also evacuated.
Fire crews have managed to contain the fire to the bike shop, and investigations into the cause are currently underway. Superintendent Bickle stated that discussions with the shop owner will be part of the investigation process.
