FIRING THE SILENT GUN: TOXIC WORKPLACES AND THEIR PLEASURE IN BETRAYING EMPLOYEES

From the zit-faced youth having no idea how to drive a car to a grumbling old-timer who mutters that society is manufactured in China. The brilliance of humanity is in everyone’s path. Illusions may contend with differentiated ages and opposite minds, including the grumbling dressed ridiculously as an air hostess who woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

People like us live every day running towards challenges; it’s some type of drug. Once it wears out, people are seen running away from said challenges, raising their hands and admitting defeat. To become a hero, one must start at zero. Once we build our identity from bricks, wood, and cement, sometimes we need the council to approve. We become our own foundations of success—or failure.

Meet Darren, your designated zero. He isn’t a superhero, but sometimes he thinks he is whenever a pretty lady is around. Fortunately, with the things he is good at, he merits higher than a zero. This young lad worked the two-day shift, mostly at nighttime. Darren’s role was a waiter; his department focused on filling tables with food and water and clearing them once customers had indulged a little too much (perhaps to sub-par cuisine). What Darren enjoyed about the job was the people, barring the bigwigs upstairs. The young lad had a crush on a girl who worked by the register; it wasn’t her beauty that he was swooned by but rather her personality and heart.

Two days is nothing steady compared to four days a week. It won’t offer anything special for Darren; his career path is going to be limited for the time being. At the same time, his decision to ask the girl out won’t really work out—such a shame!

This sweet, relatable, debatable simulated experience mirrors the politics that extend to the problems that everyday people face. Some argue that learning is different depending on the individual state of mind. Certain styles to the way people perform or how fast or slow people can acquire the skills to get through the workplace are all up to the employer’s arms. What remains between an employer and the employee is perfection. But unfortunately…

According to June 2024 statistics, unemployment rates have risen by 4.1%. If Darren’s creator and the writer of this article (who suffers from dyscalculia) did the math correctly, a quarter of the population is unemployed. Youth unemployment stands at 9.7%. But comparing a lazy, unmotivated youth to statistical unemployment might be misleading unless one is utterly clueless about career paths.

Darren, like many, forgets that at the end of the day, he and everyone else is just a number and nothing more. The cesspool of work is meaningful when the girl Darren likes is working her Thursday shift but demeaning when the managers glare at Darren every moving second, just in case he becomes a minority for endless ridicule. The managers eagerly wait for the right moment to run him down with a bombing of harsh words that turn him into nothing but dust and ash.

“When you find yourself beginning to feel short-fused and impatient when dealing with certain work situations, use it as an opportunity to develop patience…” (I wonder what my supervisor would think if I nicked quotes from the internet)

Most employers would say to the heart, “You have sent it to the wrong table. Please make sure that YOU read the order properly for next time.” During the events that took place in the dining room, when Darren cluelessly served Table 15 their meal, the order prodded the exact same meal to another order. Somebody at Table 15 is a vegan, but at least they are sympathetic after quickly pointing out the wrong meal just as Darren rushes back, zigzagging from another customer to Table 15 after awkwardly chuckling to a high adult managed accident. But as Darren returned to the kitchen and upon the manager finding out the small mishap, what Darren heard to his shock and everybody else’s surprise and implied “Been there, done that” reaction, his supervisor blurted out, annoyed at Darren’s fumble: “Where was your energy in knowing that two identical orders are not identical? (in a childish tone, annoyed) Can you not dissociate and portray yourself as some show-offish Henry Winkler Fonz guy on my set? You’re nothing like the guy, nor will you ever be!”

Screaming into someone’s face is demoralising, but pushing the trigger by having no moral compass to your words is disheartening, causing someone like Darren to have low self-esteem issues and problems raised through various mental health issues. At wit’s end of Darren’s story, the boss had quietly removed the unfortunate soul from the work chat, implying that the managers had no heart to tell him that he was fired.
