Arabic version: عرض أول لفيلم كوميدي رومانسي للأمم الأولى في مهرجان سيدني السينمائي
Maŋutji (Catching Eyes), a short film showcasing a love story from Arnhem Land, has made its debut at the Sydney Film Festival. The romantic comedy features model Cindy Rostron and first-time actor Denzel Marika as the lead characters, Muthali and Rakay. According to ABC News, the film was shot in the Arnhem Land community of Yirrkala and is part of a collection highlighting First Nations narratives about love.
Written and directed by Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs, Maŋutji explores the nuances of romance within the Yolŋu kinship system. Stubbs describes the film as reflecting the public perception of love, noting that dating can be akin to a spectator sport in her community. The title Maŋutji holds multiple meanings in Yolŋu-Matha, symbolizing both the eye and a crush, which adds depth to the film’s narrative.
The film not only highlights local talent but also pays homage to classic cinema. Producer Libby Collins noted that one of the film’s scenes pays tribute to Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, specifically referencing the iconic fish tank scene. Rostron and Marika’s chemistry is central to the story, which focuses on the budding romance between two young football players in Yirrkala.
Maŋutji is among five films showcased at the festival that emerged from a nationwide initiative seeking First Nations stories. Each project received significant funding from various Australian organizations. The film has also been nominated for awards at the festival, including best live action short and best First Nations film, marking a significant milestone for local filmmakers in the Northern Territory.
