According to ABC News, five males arrested during a dramatic police operation on Melbourne’s Monash Freeway have been charged following an alleged aggravated burglary in Brighton East and a pursuit that ended on the freeway.

Cars were rammed and traffic was brought to a standstill near Chadstone at midday as more than a dozen police officers, many in tactical gear, detained the males. The arrests caused long delays on the Monash Freeway.

Police allege a four-wheel drive and an SUV were stolen after a home invasion in Brighton East early yesterday, then used in a second aggravated burglary in Hampton Park a few hours later. A four-wheel drive was reportedly seen being driven erratically in Doveton about 8am, prompting a pursuit through eastern and south-eastern suburbs on Eastlink and the Monash Freeway.

Specialist police intercepted the vehicle and arrested three 16-year-old boys, a 17-year-old, and men aged 19 and 20. All have been charged with various offences including aggravated burglary, car theft and armed robbery.

One 16-year-old also faces charges of intentional aggravated exposure of an emergency worker to risk by driving, reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and unlicensed driving. Another 16-year-old was charged with committing an offence while on bail. The teenagers were remanded in custody to appear in a children’s court, while the 19-year-old Cranbourne East man was due in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The 20-year-old Wheelers Hill man remains in hospital under police guard.
