Flying Lotus, the acclaimed producer known for his innovative sound, has released his latest EP titled ‘Big Mama.’ The project showcases a vibrant blend of genres and reflects his passion for video games and anime. According to ABC News, the EP is a product of a new creative process developed by Steven Ellison after directing and scoring his film ‘Ash.’

‘Big Mama’ features seven tracks that create a dynamic listening experience, running for 13 continuous minutes. Ellison describes the project as a spontaneous solo endeavor, moving away from the collaborative nature of his previous work. He aimed to produce something that felt personal and fun, resulting in a mix of soothing and frenetic sounds.

The EP marks Flying Lotus’s debut release under Brainfeeder, where he aims to explore new creative avenues. He emphasizes a shift in his approach to music production, focusing on spontaneous bursts of creativity rather than structured loops. This method has reinvigorated his desire to create, allowing him to trust his instincts and experiment more freely.

In addition to the music, ‘Big Mama’ features colorful artwork by Christopher Ian McFarlane and an accompanying stop-motion short film created by Swedish duo Rymdreglage. The film, which took 300 hours to produce, captures a nostalgic essence, drawing from childhood inspirations and practical effects.

Flying Lotus also expressed interest in scoring a video game, highlighting the growing recognition of video game soundtracks. He hopes to collaborate with indie developers on future projects, further expanding his artistic repertoire. As he continues to work on new music and film, Ellison reflects on his journey and the creative possibilities ahead.
