According to ABC News, former Moonee Valley councillor Cam Nation has been sentenced to three months in jail after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 17-year-old boy in 2019. A suppression order was lifted on Thursday afternoon, allowing media to identify Nation.

Nation, a former Melbourne mayor, pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court to assaulting the teenager, who was under his supervision. Magistrate Michelle Mykytowycz said the offences were too serious for a non-custodial sentence, despite prosecutors saying that option was open to her.

The court heard Nation invited the teenager to his home in December 2019 after the boy had been drinking. The boy arrived at about 3:30am, and Nation supplied him with nitrous oxide, known as “nangs”. The magistrate said the teenager was vulnerable and “spaced-out”, and that he felt helpless and overwhelmed.

Nation was also ordered to complete an 18-month community corrections order requiring him to attend drug, mental health and sex offenders’ programs. His lawyer, Sam Norton, said Nation would appeal the sentence and lodge a bail application next week.

Nation served as a councillor for 11 years and resigned in 2024 after an IBAC investigation found he traded cocaine for influence in planning matters. He was charged in October 2025. His lawyer unsuccessfully sought to extend the suppression order for two years, citing mental health concerns.
