According to ABC News, former Northern Territory Police assistant commissioner Janelle Tonkin has taken former colleagues to court over the alleged sharing of a sexually explicit AI-generated video made using her official police photograph.

Tonkin said she became aware in December 2025 that the video had been created and that it was allegedly shared among serving Northern Territory Police Force members. She issued a statement after criminal proceedings on the matter were finalised, though the outcome of those proceedings is unknown.

She described the incident as “extremely distressing, personally and professionally”, saying no person should have their professional portrait turned into pornography and circulated among colleagues. Tonkin is now president of the advocacy group Australasian Council of Women and Policing.

Tonkin said the video was not an isolated incident, but part of broader experiences within the force that she intends to discuss publicly when the time is right. She said work remained to build a workplace where officers are treated with safety, respect and support regardless of gender, race or religion.

A Northern Territory Police Force spokesperson said the organisation could not comment on internal investigations and was legally constrained in commenting on matters before the court. The spokesperson said the conduct Tonkin was subjected to was “totally unacceptable” and that the force had zero tolerance for bullying.
