According to ABC News, a 40-year-old Perth woman has been charged with aggravated stalking of West Australian Greens senator Jordon Steele-John and is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court.
Detectives from the WA Police Family Violence Investigation Squad said the woman faces one count of aggravated stalking with intent to intimidate and one count of demanding property by written threats. Police will allege she was a former partner of Senator Steele-John.
The court matter follows Senator Steele-John taking leave from parliament in October. A group of current and former Greens staff wrote to Greens leader David Shoebridge about what they described as multiple allegations of serious misconduct involving Senator Steele-John and his behaviour in the presence of women.
Senator Steele-John has denied those allegations, including in a lengthy letter he posted to social media and later deleted. The WA branch of the Greens has commissioned an independent inquiry into the allegations. Senator Shoebridge previously said leave was appropriate in the circumstances and that he would not prejudge the inquiry.
Senator Steele-John’s office was contacted for comment. Senator Shoebridge’s office declined to comment on the ongoing court matter and the inquiry.
