A former student at the University of Surrey, Almunthir Daqamah, 21, has been charged with attempted murder following a crossbow attack on a campus staff member. The incident occurred at Manor Park Student Village in Guildford, where a campus safety officer in his 50s was shot with the weapon. According to BBC News, Daqamah also faces charges for possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possession of a bladed article, and possession of Class B drugs.

The victim is currently in stable condition at a hospital, according to Surrey Police. Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen stated that there is no indication the incident is terror-related and confirmed that authorities are not seeking any additional suspects. He acknowledged the concern this event has caused within the university community and local residents, urging the public to avoid speculation that could compromise the investigation’s integrity.

In a statement, a University of Surrey spokesperson expressed relief over the victim’s condition and commended the campus safety team for their professional response to the incident. Students at the university reported feeling shaken by the attack, with one student, Liv Harvey, sharing her concern for the injured guard. Another student, Mia Lamb, remarked on the unexpected nature of violence occurring on a university campus.

Daqamah has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Guildford Magistrates’ Court later. The university community continues to process the shock of the attack while hoping for a swift recovery for the injured staff member.
