According to ABC News, Northern Territory Police have arrested four people after an alleged violent assault in Nightcliff, Darwin’s northern suburbs, left a 30-year-old Wadeye man in critical condition. Police said the man suffered skull fractures and serious injuries to his face and legs.
Police said about 30 people got off a bus and became involved in a large fight on Monday afternoon. Some people involved were allegedly carrying poles, rocks and axes. Officers allege the 30-year-old was knocked to the ground and repeatedly assaulted by multiple people. Nearby shops went into lockdown during the disturbance.
A 17-year-old girl from Wadeye has been arrested and charged with intending to cause serious harm. Three Wadeye men, aged 21, 29 and 43, have also been arrested. All four remain in custody, while police continue trying to locate other people involved.
The arrests came as police responded to a heightened period of unrest in Wadeye, about 500 kilometres south-west of Darwin. Earlier in the week, up to about 100 people were involved in a disturbance in which they were allegedly armed with compound bows, spears and metal objects. A 22-year-old man suffered serious injuries after allegedly being struck in the back with a three-pronged spear. During a four-day police blitz, officers seized 107 litres of alcohol and half a kilogram of cannabis.
