According to The Guardian, Fremantle’s “Wharfie Time” activation has become a major talking point before Saturday’s AFL grand final against the Brisbane Lions at the MCG. The Dockers are seeking the first premiership flag in the club’s history.

Wharfie Time is a mid-game rallying device associated with Fremantle’s maritime and dockworker identity. At Optus Stadium, it uses special lighting, ominous bells over the loudspeaker and big-screen images of a boat crashing through large waves, intended to energise the crowd and the team.

The tactic is used sparingly. The Guardian reported that it appeared to help Fremantle in a round-nine comeback win over Hawthorn and again in the semi-final against Geelong, when the Dockers held an eight-point lead and closed out the match.

Its possible use in the title decider has prompted debate because the MCG is a neutral venue with no designated home side. Critics argue it could give Fremantle an unfair advantage, while others view it as harmless entertainment that could improve the atmosphere.

The AFL has not yet decided whether Wharfie Time will be permitted. AFL chief executive Andew Dillon said officials were still working through the issue, including how it would compare with Brisbane’s goal songs, which will be allowed. The person who ultimately triggers Wharfie Time also remains unclear, with differing accounts involving Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick and club administration.
