Eastwood locals have a fresh reason to get outdoors with the $4.7 million upgrade of Somerville Park officially opening today.
The revitalised park includes a new multipurpose sports half-court, a new playground for all ages featuring the City’s first multi-tower play equipment, two new outdoor fitness stations and improved walking circuit paths around the park and to nearby Pearl Avenue.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the park will give families, sports clubs and residents a vibrant new space to enjoy.
“Somerville Park has long been a local gem and these upgrades will make it an even better place for the community to play, exercise and spend time outdoors,” Cr Zaiter said.
“The new playground will be a favourite with kids, parents and carers of all ages, with the City’s first multi-tower play equipment to climb and have fun adventures.
“This project reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to improving local parks and public spaces across our City, with residents making the most of the recent upgrades to Sue Savage Reserve in Toongabbie and Shannons Paddock Playground in Westmead.
“We thank our community for their patience during the construction. This park will be a shared backyard that families, kids and local community groups can enjoy for many years to come.”
The project also includes upgraded sports field lighting, improved accessibility with improved accessible car parking spaces, improvements to the vegetated creek area, an upgraded maintenance vehicle gate, re-lined car park area, and re-lined rugby field and training field.
State Member for Parramatta Donna Davis MP said: “Somerville Park has something for everyone. This green oasis on the edge of Eastwood has been given a much needed facelift so that locals of all ages have an even better space to stay active, connect with neighbours and enjoy the outdoors.”
“It’s great to see this investment from the Minns Labor Government delivering real benefits for our community – from new play equipment for kids to improved facilities for families and sporting groups right across the local area.”
The Somerville Park Improvement project is funded by the NSW Government in partnership with the City of Parramatta Council.
