A fascinating career in acting is a dream shared by countless individuals worldwide. Regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs, these dreamers often face a common challenge: lacking the tools or opportunities to bring their ambitions to life. Many lose motivation along the way, but some remain determined to overcome every obstacle—just like J’ Ma, a Taiwanese-Australian actress and rising star.

You may recognise J’ Ma from her outstanding performance at the AIM Talent Awards or her work in Mystika, Love Unseen, and as the writer, director, and producer of Together. Her journey is one of resilience, self-discovery, and a commitment to representation in the entertainment industry.

Overcoming Family Expectations and Bias

J’ Ma’s dream of becoming an actress began when she first watched Titanic as a child and hoped to one day act alongside her favourite actor, Leonardo DiCaprio. However, her path to acting was far from easy. Growing up in an Asian family, J’ Ma faced significant resistance to her career aspirations.

“Coming from an Asian family, they want you to be a doctor, for example,” J’ Ma recalls. “When I told my mum I wanted to act, she said it was impossible for someone like me. She even told me I wasn’t pretty enough, which broke my heart.” Despite the initial hurt, J’ Ma’s mother now supports her career, and their relationship has grown stronger as a result.

Another major challenge was the lack of representation on screen. “Growing up in Australia, I never saw anyone who looked like me on TV or in films,” J’ Ma explains. This absence amplified her insecurities and delayed her pursuit of acting. Yet, her determination eventually won out.

Finding Strength Amidst Personal Challenges

In 2019, after a difficult breakup, J’ Ma decided to take a leap of faith and pursue her dream. “At that point, I thought my world was ending. I had nothing else to lose, so I decided to follow my passion,” she says.

Starting with acting classes, J’ Ma felt petrified but quickly found support among her peers. “The kindness and encouragement I received put me at ease, and I knew I was exactly where I belonged.” Since then, she has embraced every challenge, learning skills like script memorisation and self-taping.

Acting has also empowered her to express herself fully. “When you’re acting, you’re emotionally exposed. It’s helped me grow, not just as an actress but as a person. I’ve learned to share my emotions authentically, both on screen and in life.”

Memorable Roles and Meaningful Experiences

Since 2019, J’ Ma has appeared in 19 productions, with three set to release in 2025. One of her favourite roles was as Anya in the upcoming film Streets of Deceit. The movie explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and betrayal, and Anya is a feisty yet caring bar manager who works for a gang boss.

“Anya knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go after it. But around the gang boss, her softer side emerges because of their deep bond,” J’ Ma explains.

The film’s diverse cast and passionate crew made the experience even more rewarding. “Being part of such a vibrant project was magical. The diversity in the cast brought authenticity to the story, and it’s incredible to witness films like this coming to life.”

However, this role came during one of the most challenging periods of J’ Ma’s life. In 2021, she lost her best friend Caitlyn, whom she met during her first acting class. Caitlyn’s passing deeply affected J’ Ma, but filming Streets of Deceit became an anchor amidst her grief.

“I cried every night but showed up on set every day. This project became my way of honouring Caitlyn. It’s the most meaningful experience of my career so far,” she says.

Lessons in Resilience and Representation

J’ Ma’s journey highlights the importance of resilience in the face of rejection and challenges. “As an actor, you hear ‘no’ all the time, often for reasons beyond your control. The key is to stay consistent and believe in yourself,” she advises.

She has also faced bias due to her background. “I’ve been told I’m not Asian enough or that I need to blend in with Westerners. But I’ve learned to embrace who I am and let my unique identity shine.”

Representation remains a driving force in her career. Inspired by icons like Lucy Liu and Michelle Yeoh, J’ Ma is committed to paving the way for future generations. “Representation matters. It’s important for people to see themselves on screen and feel part of something bigger. Authentic storytelling connects us all.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

J’ Ma’s advice to aspiring actors is simple yet powerful: “Believe in yourself, stay resilient, and never stop learning. Acting is not about overnight success; it’s about growing and evolving, both as a person and as an artist.”

Her journey exemplifies how passion, perseverance, and embracing one’s uniqueness can transform dreams into reality. As J’ Ma continues to break barriers and tell diverse stories, she inspires others to pursue their passions, no matter the challenges.

In her own words, “You can always find light, even in the darkest moments. Keep chasing your dreams, and never give up.”
