Arabic version: المسيحيون في غزة يحتفلون بعيد الفصح الحزين وسط الصراع المستمر
Christians in Gaza marked a solemn Easter on April 5, 2026, as they faced the harsh realities of ongoing violence and displacement due to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This year, the holiday, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, was overshadowed by severe shortages of essential goods and the loss of community members. According to Al Jazeera, the situation for Gaza’s Christian population, which numbers fewer than 1,000, has become increasingly dire since the onset of hostilities.
The community, already small prior to the conflict, has seen many of its members killed in attacks on their homes and places of worship. Since October 7, 2023, when Israel launched a military campaign in response to attacks by Hamas, over 72,000 Palestinians have reportedly lost their lives. Human rights organizations have labeled the situation as genocidal, further complicating the already fragile existence of Christians in the region.
Inside the churches, Easter services were marked by an air of mourning rather than celebration. Families gathered for prayers, holding on to hope amid despair. Fouad Ayad, a displaced bioenergy trainer, expressed the challenges of finding traditional Easter items, such as eggs, which are a staple of the holiday. He lamented the absence of communal meals, a cherished tradition, due to the high cost and scarcity of meat.
Elias al-Jelda, a local resident, described how he and his family sought refuge in the Church of the Holy Family during the conflict. He recounted the loss of friends and neighbors, emphasizing that the Easter spirit has been severely diminished this year. Amal al-Masri, another community member, shared her experiences of displacement and the lack of celebration in recent years, highlighting the stark contrast to past Easters filled with joy and communal gatherings.
Despite the hardships, the Christian community in Gaza remains resilient, continuing to practice their faith and observe the traditions that have defined their holidays for generations, even as they face unprecedented challenges.
