According to ABC News, Geelong defeated Collingwood 15.7 (97) to 10.12 (72) at the MCG on Thursday, July 30, recording a 25-point AFL win after establishing a decisive early lead.

The Cats burst out of the gates and built their advantage during the first 45 minutes. At half-time, Geelong led 9.3 (57) to 4.4 (28), a 29-point margin. Collingwood then brought the contest back onto more even terms and kicked three goals before the main break.

Collingwood continued its fightback in the third quarter, with Beau McCreery and Harvey Harrison among the goalscorers. Harrison’s goal made it five in a row for the Magpies and reduced a deficit that had once reached 49 points to 16. But Geelong’s Jack Martin kicked a settling goal, and the Cats led 10.5 (65) to 7.6 (48) at three-quarter time.

Geelong dominated the inside 50 count 49-34 and clearances 41-24 at the final break. In the last quarter, Shannon Neale, Jay Polkinghorne and Oli Wiltshire helped the Cats keep Collingwood at bay. Dan McStay kicked five goals for the Magpies, including his fourth and fifth late in the match.

Collingwood lost Perryman to a hamstring injury early in the game, while Jeremy Howe was ruled out with an arm injury in the final quarter. Geelong played without Jeremy Cameron, Max Holmes, Patrick Dangerfield and others, but the win lifted the Cats into fifth place.
