George Franklin, aged 104, is months away from becoming the world’s oldest conductor, surpassing the current record held by American musician Frank Edmond. According to ABC News, Franklin’s milestone comes just months after he celebrated his birthday on March 11, 2026.

Franklin, a long-time member of the City of Perth Band, began his musical journey at the age of seven and has been actively involved with the band since 1934. He conducted the brass band from 1974 before transitioning to lead the swing band every Monday evening.

His dedication to music has been a significant part of his life, contributing to his longevity. Franklin expresses a deep passion for music, stating, “When it’s grooving it can send shivers up and down your spine, it’s exciting.” This enthusiasm has kept him engaged and active in the music community.

Having served in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War Two, Franklin’s musical career continued in a military band before he joined the City of Perth Band. He will officially break Edmond’s record on August 27, 2026, but remains somewhat skeptical about the validity of the title, questioning if someone else might claim to be older.

Family and friends regard Franklin as an accomplished musician, with his daughter Gail noting that he is still able to write music. His friend and band member Don Steel describes him as “amazing” and a pleasure to play under, highlighting the respect he has earned throughout his long career.
