NSW Labor acknowledges the importance of NAIDOC Week in the national calendar as a time to celebrate the achievements of as well as reflect and act on the challenges facing First Nations Australians.

The theme for NAIDOC Week 2022 is GET UP! STAND UP! SHOW UP! – recognising the proud history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities fighting to secure institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms.

NAIDOC is a nationally celebrated week, this year running from 3-10 July, dedicated to acknowledging, understanding and sharing the diverse culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander accomplishments, history, culture and people, in celebration of the world’s oldest continuous culture.

NSW Labor remains committed to Reconciliation and Truth-Telling through developing a pathway to Treaty and Agreement Making for First Nations communities.

NSW Labor believes if we want to realise improved justice, education, health and cultural outcomes for First Nations people, we must place First Nations communities at the centre of decision making.

Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty, David Harris said:

“This NAIDOC Week we should commit to a process of education and Truth-Telling about the long struggle of First Nations peoples for recognition and justice from the early resistance of the Frontier Wars, justice for the Stolen Generations, Land Rights and the constant struggle against racism.

“I encourage people to engage in activities to learn more about the history of the activism and resistance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to better understand the trauma they have faced, as well as to celebrate the inspirational achievements of First Nations peoples in all aspects of Australian life.”
