According to ABC News, a series of “very dangerous” storms brought hail measuring up to seven centimetres to parts of south-east Queensland on Tuesday.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Logan, parts of Ipswich, the Gold Coast, Brisbane City and Scenic Rim Council areas. It warned of damaging, locally destructive winds, large and possibly giant hailstones, and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.
Hailstones between three and seven centimetres were recorded at Yamanto, Flinders View, Ripley and Mudgeeraba between 2:30pm and 3:30pm, the bureau confirmed.
A separate severe thunderstorm warning remained in place for parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Wide Bay and Burnett, and Southeast Coast forecast districts. Under the bureau’s official definitions, giant hail is more than five centimetres in diameter.
Giant hail can cause significant injuries and damage to cars, windows, homes and crops. In 2020, hailstones measuring 14 centimetres were recorded around the Brisbane area.
