Australia’s sprint sensation Gout Gout is set to compete against rival Lachlan Kennedy in the 200m at the Maurie Plant Meet, taking place at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne this Saturday. The 18-year-old athlete, who recently completed school, is now dedicating himself full-time to training as he enters a new phase in his sprinting career.
According to The Guardian, Gout expressed his growing confidence during a press conference, stating that the anticipation of the upcoming race brings out the best in him. He reflected on their previous encounter last year, where he finished second to Kennedy, and is determined to improve upon that performance.
Gout noted that his training has become more professional and efficient since he began focusing on athletics full-time. He emphasized the importance of enhancing his starting speed and overall strength to better compete against Kennedy, who is known for his explosive starts.
Despite dealing with a cold earlier this month, Gout is optimistic about his performance. He acknowledges the added pressure of expectations this year but remains focused on his passion for running. Gout plans to defend his 200m Australian title at the upcoming national championships while also participating in the under-20 category for the 100m event.
Looking ahead, Gout intends to compete in several Diamond League meets and continental gold events, with his primary goal set on the world junior titles in Oregon, USA, in August.
