Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage won their doubles rubber in straight sets to send Great Britain through to September’s Billie Jean King Cup finals with an impressive 3-0 win against Australia. The duo defeated Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez 6-3, 6-4 on Melbourne’s hard courts to clinch the best-of-five qualifying tie.
According to BBC News, 17-year-old Mika Stojsavljevic stunned Talia Gibson – ranked more than 200 places above her – in straight sets on her competition debut. Dart recovered from a set down to beat Kimberly Birrell, contributing to the team’s overall success.
Despite being considered underdogs, Great Britain demonstrated impressive teamwork and skill, particularly in the doubles match where Dart and Burrage played together for the first time. The pair overcame an early setback, recovering from a 3-1 deficit to take control of the match and secure the win.
This victory marks Great Britain’s third consecutive qualification for the Billie Jean King Cup finals, joining hosts China in the eight-team event scheduled for September. Meanwhile, Australia will compete in November’s play-offs.
