In a landmark event that brought to light the importance of diversity within the construction and trades industry, the Greater Cumberland Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Cumberland City Council and the Trade Pathways Program Training Services NSW, successfully hosted a free event titled “Diversity is Good for Business” on the evening of March 26, 2024, at the Wenty Leagues Club.
The construction sector, known for its male-dominated workforce, has seen women representing only 12% of its workforce and a mere 2% in trade roles. The “Trade Up to a Better Future” Program aimed to address this imbalance by inviting individuals to learn about the benefits of trade and non-traditional roles for women in the construction industry.
The event featured a stellar lineup of speakers and panelists who shared their insights and experiences, highlighting the pivotal role diversity plays in enriching the workplace and driving business success. Vithyaa Thavapalan, Co-Founder and President of Brown Boss Babes, served as one of the guest speakers, shedding light on her journey and the impact of female leadership within the industry. Prof. Alphia Possamai-Inesedy, the Pro Vice Chancellor of Engagement and Advancement at Western Sydney University, also shared her expertise as a guest speaker, further enriching the dialogue.
The panel discussion brought together voices from various sectors, including Sharmily Nagarsekar, CEO of LEAD Professional Development Inc., Suzan Mutesi, an Ugandan-Australian actress, model, and fashion designer, Carol Ferrone, a TV/media personality from ABC TV, Belinda Alliband, a tradie and business owner with BT Construction, and Julia Lattouf, Co-Founder of the Lebanese Film Festival.
The panel moderator, Immanuel Selvaraj president of the Greater Cumberland Chamber of Commerce, facilitated discussions that explored the multifaceted benefits of embracing diversity within the construction sector and beyond.
The event not only served as a platform for networking and knowledge sharing but also as a call to action for industry leaders and businesses to foster a more inclusive and diverse work environment. The “Diversity is Good for Business” event was a testament to the collective efforts of organizations and individuals committed to driving change and breaking down barriers within the construction industry and other sectors.
