According to The Guardian, the first episode of its The Populist: Aeroplanes and bulldozers podcast examines financial support flowing from Australia’s richest person, Gina Rinehart, to One Nation, described as the country’s fastest growing political force.

The episode centres on One Nation leader Pauline Hanson’s response to a question from the Guardian’s senior correspondent Sarah Martin in February. Hanson said: “If you’re trying to say I’m being funded by Gina Rinehart, the answer is no.” The Guardian says it now knows that statement was not true.

Over months, Martin assembled flight-tracking data and expense records to examine what the publication calls the true extent of Rinehart’s financial support. The reporting forms the basis of episode one of The Populist, released through the Guardian’s Full Story podcast.

The episode tells its account from the Farrer byelection to the National Press Club and includes exclusive new reporting. The Guardian also directs listeners to related reporting stating that Hanson and Barnaby Joyce stayed at Rinehart’s $20m mansion after One Nation fundraisers.

The podcast is listed under Pauline Hanson, Full Story, One Nation, Australian politics and Gina Rinehart. Its title refers to “aeroplanes and bulldozers” as it investigates the relationship described in the episode between Rinehart and One Nation.
