According to The Guardian, Bruno Guimarães came off the bench to score Arsenal’s winner in a 2-1 Premier League victory over Leeds, ending the visitors’ unbeaten run. The Brazilian, described as Mikel Arteta’s key summer signing, entered shortly after the hour and scored nine minutes later as Arsenal turned a difficult contest around.

Leeds had controlled much of the opening hour and took the lead in a dominant opening 10 minutes of the second half. James Justin finished Gabriel Gudmundsson’s cross after the Icelander ran off the back of Ben White. Arsenal’s midfield had been outmuscled and outplayed for long spells, while the home side’s passing was intricate without being incisive.

Riccardo Calafiori equalised after White knocked down a cross from Noni Madueke. Arsenal then increased their urgency, producing five attempts on goal between Leeds’ opener and Guimarães’s decisive strike, matching their total from the previous 55 minutes.

The winning move began on the left, with Bukayo Saka combining with Martin Ødegaard. Ødegaard found Declan Rice, who had burst into the area, and Rice back-heeled the ball to Guimarães on the edge of the box. The midfielder steered his effort into the corner of James Trafford’s goal. Arsenal later had further chances, with Ødegaard missing from close range and Trafford denying Saka in a one-on-one.

Arteta said Arsenal had to “pinch our desire to win” against a Leeds side he called “incredibly dangerous”. Leeds manager Daniel Farke said his team had developed in all aspects and had come close to winning away against one of the best sides in the world, while crediting Arsenal’s mentality for finding a way to win.
