Gulf Christian College in Normanton has launched year 11 and 12 classes, marking a significant milestone in the Gulf of Carpentaria’s educational landscape. This development allows students in the region to complete their senior schooling locally for the first time in the town’s 150-year history. Previously, students had to either relocate to attend boarding schools or drop out of education altogether.
According to ABC News, families in the area faced tough decisions as year 10 was the highest level of education available. The nearest towns were often hours away, and many students had to travel long distances to continue their education. This new initiative is expected to bridge that gap, providing opportunities for students from Normanton and surrounding areas such as Karumba and Croydon.
Principal Andrew Evetts emphasized the importance of keeping students connected to their families and communities. He noted that for many Indigenous students, boarding schools pose unique challenges, making local education a critical option. The school has already enrolled six students in the inaugural year 12 class, with plans to expand its curriculum to include ATAR subjects like physics and chemistry.
Blake Gregory, a 17-year-old athlete and one of the first students to graduate from the new senior classes, expressed excitement about the opportunities available. He has been training for the Oceania Championships while completing a certificate II in sport and recreation. His success reflects the aspirations of many students in the region who are eager to pursue both education and sports.
The introduction of senior classes is seen as a generational change for the Gulf of Carpentaria. Senior school coordinator Peter Lister highlighted the need for community engagement to ensure the success of the program, stressing that regular attendance and involvement are key to making year 12 meaningful for students. The school aims to foster a supportive environment that encourages academic achievement and personal growth for all its students.
