The Palestinian group Hamas has urged its ally Iran to end attacks on Gulf states, while affirming Tehran’s right to defend itself against Israel and the United States in the war they launched. The appeal, made on Saturday, emphasizes the need for regional cooperation to end the ongoing conflict affecting much of the Middle East.
According to Al Jazeera, Hamas called upon its “brothers in Iran” to not target neighbouring countries, stressing the importance of preserving bonds of fraternity in the region. The group highlighted the need for cooperation to halt the aggressions currently unfolding.
Hamas has been actively resisting the Israeli military campaign in Gaza, which escalated following an attack on October 7, 2023. This conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating over 72,000 deaths in Gaza alone. Gulf nations, particularly Qatar, have engaged in mediation and diplomatic efforts during this crisis.
Since the start of the Iran war by the US and Israel on February 28, several Gulf states have reported Iranian missile and drone attacks. While Hamas supports Iran’s right to respond to these aggressions, it has urged restraint regarding neighbouring countries. The group has historically received financial and military backing from Iran, being part of a weakened “axis of resistance” that includes Hezbollah and the Houthis.
In recent developments, Gulf countries pledged more than $4 billion in financial support to US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This commitment was made during the board’s first meeting in Washington, where Qatar and Saudi Arabia each pledged $1 billion, while Kuwait also pledged $1 billion over the coming years, and the UAE announced an additional $1.2 billion in support for Gaza through the board.
Despite a US-backed ceasefire agreement in Gaza since October 2025, violations by Israeli forces continue to occur, further complicating the situation in the region.
