According to ABC News, Hawthorn defeated the Western Bulldogs by 11 points, 6.5 (41) to 4.6 (30), but captain Emily Bates suffered a serious right-leg injury late in the third quarter at Kennedy Community Centre.
Bates was taken from the field on a stretcher after her leg twisted underneath her in a tackle. The 30-year-old, who played her 100th AFLW match a week earlier, was expected to be taken to hospital for further assessment.
The Hawks also lost Laura Stone to concussion following an early head clash. Hawthorn trailed by 11 points at half-time before Daniel Webster’s side kicked five unanswered goals in the third term, with four coming before Bates was injured.
Aine McDonagh kicked a career-best four goals to extend her lead atop the season’s goal-kicking list. Eliza West collected 24 disposals, Tamara Smith had 20 and Jasmine Fleming recorded 19, while Lucy Wales also impressed.
The result moved Hawthorn to a 3-2 record and into the top eight, ahead of the Bulldogs, also 3-2, on percentage. Isabelle Pritchard led the Bulldogs with 31 disposals and eight clearances, while Elisabeth Georgostathis had 19 disposals.
