According to ABC News, Hawthorn ended North Melbourne’s record 32-match AFLW winning streak with a 4.8 (32) to 3.7 (25) victory in Cairns on Friday night. The seven-point defeat ended a sequence that was the longest run of straight wins in AFL, VFL and AFLW history.

North Melbourne had not lost since the 2023 grand final against Brisbane. The Kangaroos went undefeated through their 2024 and 2025 premiership campaigns, having begun the 2024 season with a win and a draw before starting the historic streak. Friday night’s 25 points was also North’s lowest score since 2023.

North led by 10 points at the main break in blustery and humid conditions, but Hawthorn applied relentless pressure after halftime. Mikayla Williamson kicked the only goal of the third term to cut the margin to three points. Four straight behinds then gave the Hawks the lead in the final quarter for the first time since the opening term.

Cairns native Jacqueline Dupuy kicked a goal to put Hawthorn seven points ahead at the nine-minute mark, before North’s Blaithin Bogue responded against the run of play. Hawks ruck Lucy Wales snapped the sealing goal inside the final two minutes. Jasmine Fleming starred with 25 disposals as Hawthorn played without injured captain Emily Bates, who suffered an ACL rupture the previous weekend. The result was Hawthorn’s greatest win since joining the women’s league in 2022 and left the team just outside the top four.
