According to ABC News, Australia’s second-largest private hospital operator, Healthscope, will be split among four hospital operators after entering receivership in May 2025. Receivers McGrath Nichols announced a deal covering 25 hospitals and Healthscope’s centralised service platform following the company’s financial collapse.
Not-for-profit operator Calvary Health Care will take over 14 hospitals. The remaining hospitals and services will be divided among Healthe Care, ACURIO Health and KnG Group. Healthe Care, which is backed by private equity firm Pacific Equity Partners, will acquire Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital and Melbourne’s Knox Private Hospital.
Healthscope entered receivership after its North American private equity owner, Brookfield, withdrew support. Other Healthscope hospitals have since been sold, while the New South Wales government resumed control of Sydney’s Northern Beaches Hospital, previously operated by Healthscope under a public-private partnership.
McGrath Nichols said lenders agreed to the transaction after the new owners committed to continuity and job protections for Healthscope’s 14,000 frontline staff. Keith Crawford of McGrath Nichols said the arrangement would provide certainty for about half a million patients who use Healthscope services and help avoid additional pressure on Australia’s public hospital system.
Calvary Health Care chief executive Damien Bruce, speaking for the consortium, said staff had demonstrated dedication and resilience during a difficult period. He said the group had an opportunity to build a stronger and more sustainable future for healthcare focused on patients, communities and the health system.
