According to ABC News, the electorate offices of Indi independent MP Helen Haines in Wodonga and Wangaratta are reopening little more than a week after an alleged attack that resulted in the loss of both her legs. Her team said the offices would resume operations to continue assisting constituents with Commonwealth matters.
The offices will open three days each week for the remainder of the year, while staff will remain available by email on other days. In a statement, Ms Haines’s team thanked people for their care and support for the MP, her family and staff, and asked constituents to respect her privacy. The team said it would not provide updates on her health or circumstances.
Ms Haines is in a serious but stable condition and will continue to hold the seat of Indi. Her staff, some of whom witnessed the incident and rushed to assist her, have sought to restore electorate services despite the circumstances. University of Canberra School of Government head Simon Jackman said it was noteworthy that staff had focused on reopening the office as soon as possible.
Federal parliament on Monday approved a motion by Leader of the House Tony Burke granting Ms Haines leave of absence until November 26, the final sitting day of the year. A member granted leave is excused from House service and committee responsibilities. Professor Jackman said he expected parliament would continue to grant leave for as long as necessary, citing the public sympathy following the attack.
