Helen Mirren has publicly addressed an incident where she was called an ‘evil Zionist bitch’ while being harassed in the street in London. The actor described the encounter as an attack by a man who she believed was either overly passionate or possibly mentally unstable. This incident, which is believed to have taken place last year, has gained attention after footage surfaced online.
Speaking at the Taormina film festival, Mirren expressed her concerns about the rise of ‘evil forces’ globally, while reaffirming her support for Israel. She remarked, ‘Evil forces are rising everywhere, even in a country like Israel.’ Mirren also criticized the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza, stating, ‘How could you possibly repeat the actions of what was done to you as people to other people? Crimes against humanity, it’s called.’ According to The Guardian, she highlighted the importance of Israel’s creation while questioning the methods used.
Mirren, who is not Jewish, reflected on her upbringing in post-World War II Europe, emphasizing the profound impact of the Holocaust on her parents’ generation. She acknowledged her previous support for Israel, including co-signing a letter advocating for the country’s participation in Eurovision. However, she also indicated that she would have joined protests against current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressing solidarity with demonstrators.
Additionally, Mirren discussed her co-star from the streaming series MobLand, Tom Hardy, who appears to have departed from the show after reported friction with producers. She shared her admiration for Hardy, stating she would work with him again without hesitation, emphasizing her genuine support for him as an artist.
